How Many Women Does It Take...
In a moment of desperation, I discovered the extraordinary power of sisterhood, where vulnerability became strength and asking for help brought us closer together.
The other day, I was visiting some friends and shortly upon my arrival, my early morning attempt at rapid hydration hit and I promptly excused myself to go to loo. There I was trying to navigate the drawstring on my sports pants when alas, a knot formed so tightly that I was unable to unfasten them. I was desperately trying to get these pants untied so that my poor bladder (which has never been the same since having my child, mind you) could be relieved. In utter frustration, I thought, “let me fight the knot”… Nope, not gonna happen… Maybe I should just force the drawstring to snap, thereby rendering the pants unwearable without a belt (ooh, now that would be a fashion statement). As I struggled to figure out what to do next, I did the unthinkable… I walked out of the bathroom, shirt raised and approached my two friends, asking them to assist me in this most dire time of need. And there in that moment unfolded the extraordinary gift of the Sisterhood in action!!!
For a good 5 minutes, they alternated in taking turns trying to untie this knot, which ended up being a knot within a knot. There was teamwork, dedication, devotion, perseverance in not only getting me to my end game, but in salvaging my “oh so comfortable” pants. Finally, the tag team knot-undoing paid off and I was free!
I know we’ll laugh about this for years to come, but I was reminded so much that day about the wonders of being a part of this sisterhood called, WOMAN.
I remembered that…
- if we would put aside our self-judgment and masks of perfection and simply ask for help and allow ourselves to receive it, we’d give each other permission to do the same;
- when given the opportunity, we raise each other up with loving support;
- vulnerability opens the door and let’s others in and from that place, the cycle of giving and receiving is possible; and
- when we lean on one another, as a community, we are not weak, but strong beyond belief and we thrive!!!
I can’t imagine Bob, coming out of the john with his zipper stuck and asking Jim if he could help him out (it could happen, I suppose). There are certain moments that only we women can share and I am so grateful for the Sisterhood… so grateful for my friends… so grateful to be a woman coming into my own!!!
When was the last time you asked for help?
